Our Heritage Kay R. Shirley, Ph.D., CFP® Original Founder Dr. Kay Shirley is the founder of Financial Development Corporation and the career mentor of Jody Owenby. They began working together in 1988 building a business dedicated not only to advising people how to invest their hard-earned money but also teaching them the positives and negatives of different approaches to investing. Dr. Shirley, a former teacher and management consultant, is recognized as having achievements in the financial services arena over many years. Among those recognitions are the August 2010 Registered Rep magazine which lists Dr. Shirley as number 13 out of 100 Top Independent Broker/Dealer Financial Advisors, based on assets under management. In addition, the June 2010 Barron’s magazine lists Dr. Shirley among the Top 100 Women advisors in the nation. In the February 2011 Barron’s magazine listing, Dr. Shirley was #17 among the Top 25 Financial Advisors in Georgia, and the only female on the Georgia list. For every year since 2004 Dr. Shirley and Financial Development Corporation have been listed by Barron’s magazine in their lists of Top Women Financial Advisors and Top Independent Financial Advisors. Factors included in the rankings: assets under management, revenue produced for the firm, client satisfaction, regulatory record, and philanthropic work. She earned her B.S. in Mathematics from Mississippi State University and Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Management from Georgia State University. The author of two books, Dr. Shirley presented on many financial talk shows and often spoke to civic, community and religious groups. Following her stroke in January 2011, Dr. Shirley sold her practice to Jody Owenby, her planned successor. She works exhaustively to recover, and the legacy she left still influences our business.
